Drama

Learning and Growing Together!

Welcome to The Montsaye Drama Department

Drama lessons at Montsaye are exciting and creative opportunities for our students to learn about the world around them whilst developing their specific performance abilities and transferable skills that will become imperative for them to possess as they move through their academic career and forward into the world of work. Learning opportunities take place in our large purpose-built Drama Studio, the Main Hall with its traditional stage and proscenium arch and in an intimate carpeted performance space located within the main school building.

Key Stage 3

Year 7 and 8

Drama is studied in mixed ability groups at Key Stage 3. Topics covered include basic theatre skills, multicultural arts, practitioners and theatre history.

In Years 7 and 8, each student will enjoy one hour of Practical Drama each week. Homework is set fortnightly and there are vocab exercises to be completed once a fortnight too. Each student has a Drama book in which they record evidence of their classwork and homework activities. Parents are encouraged to comment in their children’s books and dialogue between staff, students and parents in the form of attendance to performances, workshop rehearsals and Drama club activities is always welcomed.

Students will be assessed across three practical aspects:

  • Creating
  • Performing
  • Responding

These aspects, which underpin the assessment criteria for work at GCSE and A Level, form the basis of all lessons and Schemes of Work that will be completed in the first two years. Our Aim is that students will enjoy their progression and be fully prepared should they opt to continue with Drama into Year 9 and beyond.

Year 9

If students continue their dramatic journey with us forward into Year 9 they will continue to hone the skills and maturity needed to participate in the GCSE qualification. To prepare students for the reality of practical exams and to give them a specifc opportunity to perform all Year 9 Drama students take part in the Trinity Guildhall Grade 4 Performance exam. This involves devising their own work in small groups and performing it to an external examiner. This has now been running here at Montsaye for three years with 100% of participating students achieving a Pass or higher.

Key Stage 4

GCSE Drama is offered in Year 10 and 11. Students follow the Edexcel syllabus which offers a balance between the practical performance elements and written portfolios highlighting students developed understanding. It also includes a visit to a theatrical performance which students then review. Although there is no final written exam; this course is not for the fainthearted. Students who participate must be determined, resilient and continually focused on the pursuit and development of their own creative skills.

Key Stage 5

In Year 12 and Year 13, students have the opportunity to follow the Edexcel AS and A Level course. This continues to develop the skills learnt at GCSE with a further development of theatrical knowledge specifically focusing on devising/performing, key historical periods and practitioners. Students move on from Montsaye to participate in a range of HE courses connected to the industry and as always the transferable skills acquired at AS/A2 Drama compliment any area of study or work our students decided to follow.
