Curriculum

At Montsaye Academy our exciting, broad curriculum ensures all students have access to the full range of subjects. The curriculum is designed to help students develop the skills and understanding they will need for further study and adult life. Our curriculum is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that it matches the needs, aspirations and potential of all our learners.

At Key Stage 3, students are taught either in mixed ability groups or sets. In Year 7 and Year 8, as well as being taught a broad range of subjects, students are given activities in lessons which encourage a range of personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS). In Year 9 students start a number of their Key Stage 4 courses, including English, mathematics and French, and the OCR National course in ICT which they are expected to complete by the end of Year 9.

At Key Stage 4, we offer a common core of subjects consisting of English, mathematics, French, science, RE and PE. Students can then choose from a range of other options. All students are required to follow one applied or vocational course, which can be worth several GCSEs on completion. We currently offer applied courses in business studies, ICT, media studies and sport and leisure. We also offer the new Diploma in ICT at Montsaye, and students also have the opportunity to take the Diplomas in Creative and Media or Engineering which are offered in conjunction with Tresham College and Latimer.

We also offer a range of courses for students who will benefit from working in an environment where they can get lots of practical hands-on experience.  These subjects offer continual assessment throughout the course, and may include work experience, and currently include the CACHE course in child care and courses in construction, motor vehicles or hair and beauty at Tresham.

In addition to one of these courses, students may choose from a wide range of other GCSE subjects: art, business studies, child development, drama, food and nutrition, geography, German, graphics, history, music, resistant materials, Spanish and textiles.

At Key Stage 5, students can select from a broad range of A Level subjects as well as a number of Level 3 vocational courses. The advantage to our students is that, in addition to standard subject combinations, the option block system enables students to mix A Level subjects with applied courses such as a BTEC in Health and Social Care, Cambridge Technical Diplomas in ICT or the OCR Technical Extended Certificate in Sport. The vast majority of students start three subjects in Year 12, which they continue with and complete in Year 13. Full details of Sixth Form provision, entry criteria and course details may be found in the online brochure for 2017 entry.
